The world’s best cricket commentator passes away

On 29th December 2012, Tony Greig passed away after suffering from a heart attack. He was also undergoing treatment for Lung cancer during that period.

The month of December 2012 hasn’t been a good month for Cricket fans. First, Ricky Ponting retired from Tests, and then Sachin retired from ODIs. But the most bad news was the death of Tony Greig. I love his style of commentary and his great voice. I felt so bad when I heard of his death. In fact, I was a bit unhappy that he didn’t commentate during India’s matches in the last few years. I read somewhere that he had settled down in Australia, but we still couldn’t hear his voice during the last India’s tour of Australia (2011-2012) even though he was still actively doing commentary for a lot of Australia matches. I was so angry that I even sent a mail to STAR sports demanding an explanation.

But now it’s all over. We cannot hear his great voice again. What a great loss!

To quote some of his lines which I remember –

‘In the air…this could be caught…’ – Who could forget this famous line from the 2003 world cup.

‘Bret Lee to Tendulkar. Solidly played. Solidly down the ground..and solidly four runs! Unbelievable! What looked like a forward front-foot defence has gone for four!

…and his voice ringing all over Sharjah when Sachin went berserk…. We will miss you Tony.

Thank you very much for all the sweet memories.
